Start where you are. Don’t worry about when to begin. Jump in and you can add material later.
Old photos can recall a way to inspire you (it might go in your memoir as well!). Or find an object from your past to inspire you.
Jot down ideas you might forget and put them in a basket on your desk. They could be names of characters, plots, a conversation you overheard, etc. They aren’t part of your current writing, but you might need them someday. And you won’t worry about losing the idea.
Journal as often as you can – by pencil or computer. Early mornings seem to work best for many. Scrawl anything that comes to mind.
Write daily. If you are stuck, simply write this sentence below until other ideas surface: “I cannot write today because…” Writing about that block may release it.
Read writing magazines to see awards, workshops, contests, writer’s retreats advertised. Examples: Poets & Writers and Writer’s Digest.
Find a writing buddy with whom to share your work. You will feel a lot better and return to the keyboard with a satisfying feeling.
